As its name suggests, the Anatolian Shepherd was originally—and often still is—employed in guarding livestock. Its temperament is one fitting for a guard dog: possessive and protective of the people it views as its family, suspicious of strangers, and potentially aggressive if threatened. Because of this, the Anatolian Shepherd must be taught from an early age who’s boss. Some dog lovers view the name “Anatolian Shepherd” as a category of breeds including all Turkish shepherds: Kangal dogs, Akbash dogs, and Aksaray Malaklisi dogs.
