The Black Mouth Cur is an American breed of hunting and cattle dog. This breed appears in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, black, brown and buckish, all of which are accepted. Each variety has a squared muzzle that is black in color, although rarely a “maskless” dog is accepted. Black Mouth Curs are a very muscular breed that excels in hunting, herding and any all around utility position. They successfully herd animals, track game and hunt squirrel and bear. They are also used as search and rescue dogs. When properly trained, these dogs can be very social and excellent family dogs. However, since they were originally bred as homestead dogs that would protect their families and property, they can become very territorial at times.
