Developed from Newfoundlands, English Otter Hounds, Flat-Coated Retrievers and Curly-Coated Retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was originally bred as a swimming companion for hunters. This sometimes stubborn breed can have dominance problems if its owners are not consistent or confident enough with training while the dog is young, so it is recommended that new owners avoid the breed. However, if they are taken on daily walks or allowed to swim (if possible) to release their energy, they can be affectionate and friendly dogs, good with families and children. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is also known as a Chessie or Chessy Dog.
