The term cur dog refers to a mongrel dog however historically it was used to describe a breed of short-tailed cattle droving dogs. There are references to cur dogs dating back to the 1700’s but no recorded documents that detail when it was originally developed or what breeds were used. Cur dogs are considered a mix of hunting breeds, terriers and hounds as well as feist dogs brought to America. Individual cur dogs were bred to meet the needs of its owners based on the type of work or hunting it would be doing. Regardless of the breeds used, cur dogs needed to be high performance work dogs that were intelligent and fast with excellent stamina. They are typically medium sized dogs with a short coat and are fiercely loyal to their owners.
