The gentle yet stubborn Irish Water Spaniel is often confused with a poodle by those who do not know the breed as they share the poodle's water resistant, curly coat. Reserved with those it does not know, this dog is very affectionate with its family with firm, consistent training. Bred for retrieving birds, this dog has a very gentle mouth making them good with children. They do require significant exercise although they would do well in a house with a small yard provided that their exercise needs are met. These dogs are not for owners who are looking for a dog that requires little to no training or those who are not wanting to set firm boundaries as this dog will happily take a leadership role. These dogs are also known as the IWS or Whiptail.
