Contrary to it's name, the Irish Wolfhound is not related to the Wolf species at all. In fact, it acquired it's name because they were originally bred to be used in the hunting of Wolves. Today however, the Irish Wolfhound makes a great domestic pet and are much more independent than most breeds. Large and imposing, the Irish Wolfhound may seem like a fierce dog, but is typically quite gentle when not provoked.
