The term Mastiff can be used to describe any of the number of different Mastiff breeds, however it is most commonly used in reference to the English Mastiff.  Mastiff's are traditionally large dogs with massive heads and bodies.  As a natural guard dog, the Mastiff is quick to defend it's territory and needs socialization at an early age with other dogs to avoid becoming confrontational.  However, the Mastiff is a gentle and loyal dog with their human masters and are even very patient with young children.  They are also sometimes referred to as a Molosser.
