The Norwegian Elkhound is one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds known today. Also known as the Norsk Elghund Grå or Norsk Elghund Sort, they are excellent with children, and there is no question why the Vikings valued this dog as one of their most prized companions. They require moderate exercise and grooming and owners often are amazed that, even when wet, these dogs do not have a strong odor. These dogs do make excellent guard dogs as they, despite being affectionate and gentle with their family, are fearless to those they consider a threat to their family. As they are larger, they would do better with a home with a yard than an apartment although if their exercise needs are met an apartment would be acceptable.
