History and Origin:
The Peekapoo has enjoyed a long history as a “designer dog” breed, appearing in the 1950s and 60s as one of the first Poodle crosses. A lapdog to its core, the Peekapoo was bred to be a suitable companion for people with allergies, and continues to be one of the most popular Poodle mixbreeds.
Personality and Temperament:
The Peekapoo is a loving little dog, devoted to its family and good with children. It can be wary with strangers and does not hesitate to bark in alarm. Proper socialization with other dogs and people will help the Peekapoo develop into a relaxed, friendly companion, suitable and popular for therapy work. Because of its Poodle blood, the Peekapoo is prone to timidity and separation anxiety, therefore gentle and confident leadership from its owner is needed for the dog to settle into the role of family companion. Overall, the Peekapoo is a charming mix-breed that would pair well with a nervous or first-time dog owner.
Exercise & Training:
While content to curl up beside its owner all day, the Peekapoo does enjoy walking and being outdoors. A walk a day and some play time will keep it happy and healthy. It is suitable for apartment living, providing it gets to explore outdoors daily. Usually inheriting the quick intelligence of the Poodle, the Peekapoo is an easy dog to train and picks up commands quickly.
Grooming:
Typically, the Peekapoo’’s coat is long and slightly frizzy; it requires daily brushing to keep it tangle-free. Professional grooming a few times a year will be needed if a shorter coat is desired. Bathe once a month or only when necessary to prevent the skin from drying out.
Similar Breeds:
As a mix breed, the Peekapoo is similar to other Poodle or Pekinese crosses. Other popular Poodle crosses ideal for companionship include the Bichonpoo (Bichon/Poodle), the Pomapoo (Pomeranian/Poodle), and the Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle).
Interesting Facts about the Peekapoo:
1. The Peekapoo can be registered in a number of designer dog breed registries, such as the American Canine Hybrid Club (“Peke-A-Poo”), the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (“Peke-A-Poo”), the International Designer Canine Registry (“Peekapoo”), and the Designer Breed Registry (“Peke a Poo”).
2. While many designer dogs possess multi-generational heritage (i.e., a Peekapoo that is the product of breeding two Peekapoos instead of a Pekinese and a Poodle), most Peekapoos are not. Interest in creating a separate breed has encouraged many breeders to maintain “purity” and never breed two Peekapoos together.
