The Portuguese Water Dog goes by many names, the Cão de Água, Cao de Agua de Pelo Encaradolado, Cao de Agua de Pelo Ondulado, Portie, PWD and the Portuguese Fishing Dog. Developed in Portugal, this low-shedding dog requires significant grooming, exercise and space to run. These dogs require plenty of attention and will play for hours with children. As these dogs were bred for retrieving nets and fishing, they do not have the high prey drive of hounds and often get along with other animals in the household without issue. While affectionate with their family, without firm handling this dog can be very aggressive with strangers, and this must not be allowed.
